In this video, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald examines how al-Jolani, the leader of the al-Qaeda offshoot in Syria known as Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), is portrayed in the US media and by the US government. He points to historical parallels between how the US supported the mujahideen in Afghanistan in the 1970s and 1980s, from which Al-Qaeda later emerged, and how it is now backing Jolani’s group, the Levant Liberation Organization (HTS), to achieve geopolitical goals.
