In this episode of The Source, we have an in-depth conversation with Prof. Junaid Ahmad about Pakistan and its relationship with the United States. We introduce the history and political system of Pakistan and then examine the conditions that led to the rise of Imran Khan. Imran Khan became prime minister in August 2018 and, after taking a neutral stance on Russia’s war in Ukraine, was removed from power in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote in Pakistan’s parliament. Independent observers believe his removal was orchestrated by the Pakistani military with Washington’s backing. Leaked classified Pakistani government documents from 2023 confirm this version of events. We examine the significance of these documents and discuss the current state of Imran Khan.
