In this video series, we document the journey of independent journalist and international law expert Dimitri Lascaris to southern Lebanon, where the situation is on the brink of war between Israel and Hezbollah.
On July 31, 2024, Israel assassinated Hezbollah’s top military commander, Fuad Shukr, in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Beirut. Three weeks later, Dimitri Lascaris visited the site of the Shukr’s killing to examine the extent of the damage caused by Israel’s strike. On August 21, 2024, an Israeli drone strike killed Khalil Maqdah, a leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Maqdah was killed in the city of Saida, which is situated on the southern coast of Lebanon. Several hours after the killing, Dimitri Lascaris and Lebanese journalist Hadi Hoteit visited the site of Maqdah’s assassination and reported from the scene. From there, Lascaris and Hoteit drove inland toward the border between Lebanon and Israel. Along the way, they stopped for a cup of tea on the northern bank of the Litani River. As children from nearby villages played in the river on a hot summer’s day, Israeli warplanes carried out several airstrikes in their vicinity.
This video was produced by Dimitri Lascaris and published on his YouTube channel on the 20th and 21st of August, 2024. We have translated it into German and are republishing it today to help build opinion on this issue in Germany and beyond.
