Thanks to WikiLeaks, we have access to tens of thousands of embassy dispatches written by American ambassadors from around the world between 1966 and February 2010. These embassy dispatches give us unique insights into the analyses and intentions of politicians and provide answers to the questions of whether Russian, American and German politicians foresaw the conflict in Ukraine and whether Ukraine’s accession to NATO was really being pursued by the West. Furthermore, they show us the view of Russian politicians as well as the position of the German government under Merkel regarding Ukraine.
